Abstract

In elderly patients with aortic aneurysm and its large branches who underwent radiation therapy, surgical interventions on the pelvic organs or requiring drainage by the ureteric stent have a high risk of arterio-ureteral fistula formation. Arterio-ureteral fistula is an extremely rare, but hazardous complication, accompanied by massive hematuria. Modern diagnostic methods, such as angiography, CT angiography and ureterography, do not always reveal this complication. Survival of patients directly depends on timely diagnosis and the coordination between urologists and vascular surgeons. Given the life-threatening nature of the complication, ballooning occlusion of the ureter and nephrostomy can be performed urgently on such patients, followed by the installation of a stent-graft. The article presents its own clinical experience in the surgical treatment of a patient with arterio-ureteral fistula.
